Today, 13 December, Sweden & Scandinavia celebrates Lucia Day. The event symbolizes light in dark winter.
Celebrated annually in December, this 400 year old historic custom, is an atmospheric event as integral to Swedish culture as midsummer & crayfish parties.
Lucia is the bearer of light in the darkest time of the year arriving with a crown of candles, accompanied by handmaidens carrying candles and star boys with cone-shaped hats, all dressed in long white robes.
A Lucia procession sometimes includes children dressed as gingerbread biscuits and elves. Everyone sings traditional Lucia songs that most Swedes know (more or less) by heart.
We continue to go green. In February 2024, the first large methanol-enabled vessel of the so-called Equinox series will enter service on the AE7 string connecting Asia and Europe through the Suez Canal, which includes port calls in Shanghai, Tanjung Pelepas, Colombo and Hamburg.
In Maersk (Maersk) we have ordered a further six large ocean-going vessels that can sail on green methanol. The six vessels will be built by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and have a nominal capacity of approx. 17,000 containers (Twenty Foot Equivalent – TEU). They will replace existing capacity in the Maersk fleet.
We have set a net-zero emissions target for 2040 across the entire business and has also set tangible near-term targets for 2030 to ensure significant progress. This includes a 50% reduction in emissions per transported container in the Maersk Ocean fleet compared to 2020 and a principle of only ordering newbuilt vessels that can be operated on green fuels.
UNCTAD has joined other leading international agencies to form a task force on net zero policy.
The task force will ensure the credibility and accountability of 1.5°C-aligned net zero emissions commitments by non-state actors.
Building on the work of United Nations Secretary-General’s High Level Expert Group on Net-Zero Emissions Commitments of Non-State Entities, the task force will aim to help realize its recommendations. bit.ly/47RUcza
