Bangkok is getting a new name. Well, not exactly new. But it’s what Thais already call it — Krung Thep Maha Nakhon.
The Office of Royal Society drafted an announcement of the change and the Thai cabinet approved it on Tuesday, 15 February.
According to the announcement, the name ‘Bangkok’ will still be recognised. But it will appear in parenthesis.
Bangkok’s name in Thai is actually the longest name of a city in the world and ‘Krung Thep Maha Nakhon’ is merely a shortened version of it.
The full name is, ’Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit’.
